After SoundMashine has finished loading you will be presented with a grid like the image presented here on the left.
The grid consists of 16 Tiles, which are used to trigger the recorded slices. Before we can continue we need to get some audio into the app. To record audio in SoundMashine hold down your finger anywhere on the grid until you see the recording audio dialog appear. This will last for around 6 seconds. Once the app has finished recording it will then process the sound into discrete slices which are then divided up over the 16 tiles. This process is automatic however you are able to manually alter the slice assignment after this stage has completed.
Once the processing dialog has disappeared you are able to trigger the Tiles by tapping on the screen. Each tiles animation plays according to the time duration of the assigned slices and their corresponding playback rate. By default on launch each Tile is set as ” One Shot” so it will only play once upon being triggered. This default behaviour can be changed in the apps setting screen by turning “Loop” on or by setting individual Tile behaviour in the Tile configuration screen.
The gesture control system for the main screen is as shown in this diagram

Swipe Right: Puts the sequencer into record mode all tile presses will be recorded
Swipe Left: Start playing back the recorded sequence
Swipe Down: Stop the sequence from playing
Swipe Up: Go to configuration screen for the Tile you have swiped up on
Press down: record audio (any playing sequences will be stopped while audio is recording)
Pinch: Sequencer speed
Pinch in and out to change the speed setting:
X = Standard speed
X + Increase Playback Rate
X – Decrease Playback Rate
Swiping up on a tile takes you to the Tile configuration page. Each Tile has has its own set of parameters, which are set manually or randomised between a set of values.

The configuration page is divided into the following areas
Slice information
Displayed here are the number of slices detected on the last recording pass. Next to this is the start slice indicator and the end slice indicator. These are the indicators for the manual slice assign slider. Any changes made by this slider will only be actioned if the slice auto button is switched off (A/M) button indicated in the picture above.
Random buttons
All buttons listed to left up until but not including the loop button set the channels parameters to the random function. When this button is activated the slider will change to a blue colour and the range you set on the slider controls the randomisation range for that particular parameter. Each time a Tile is tapped or triggered by a recorded sequence, it will change the value of the parameter.
The Sliders
Slice Slider: The slices assigned to the Tile, if the slice assignment is set to manual
Rate: Playback speed of the Tile
Pitch: Pitch of the Tile
Win: Window size of the granular sound engine, low window = lofi , high window=hifi
Feed: Feedback level
Delay: Delay level
Warp: Delay modulation
Bottom Row Buttons
Loop: Once activated, loops the Tile until the next Tile is activated
Audition: Switch this on to hear changes on the selected Tile only
A/M: Switches between Auto slice assign and Manual Slice Assign, Auto is on by default
To exit the configuration page swipe down.
For a comprehensive run through please watch the video below. If you experience any problems using the App or if you wish to leave any feedback please fill in the comment box at the bottom of the page.
Version 1.01
- Contains a fix for the manual slice slider, which encountered an issue on second record pass
- Added extra functions to the application preference screen. Max effect levels for the sliders can now be adjusted, allowing the maximum effect levels that can be sent, to be considerably more extreme.
Version 1.02
- Updated to run on 3GS and iPad 1
great tool ! i hope that next update will have save/load of wavs and save/load of states. the rest its great
thanks !!!
I agree, great tool. I would like to see polyphonic pad triggering, at least on the iPad 2 and import/export of wav would be great as well.
Thanks
keep it up.
Hope to add polyphony to a future iPad2 version along with a number of other enhancements. Many thanks for your comments.
Fantastic
great app. I’ve been making some good noise with it on my iphone. I wish I could have one selectable drone tile that always loops (with the loop point advancing by x number of samples each timpe it loops) while the rest act the way they do now. So…iphone 2 sample playback would be the sweet. Different loop options would be cool too: normal, reverse, forward to backwards. and a tile volume slider.
Hi thanks for the feedback. I am planning to add polyphony to SoundMashine 2, thanks for the other suggestions, I will certainly consider them for the new release, watch this space!
When will Soundmashine 2 be released, and will it be an update? I would really like import/export of samples and recording audio with audio copy and paste (ACP) or general pasteboard with other apps. Right now I have to sample from my iphone to BM2 or something else to make a sequence that would be easier to do in the same application. Thanks for such a great sounding app!
Hi thanks for the comments. Im not sure when the new update will be ready. I am in the process of playing with ideas for the new sound engine, all I can say is watch this space for announcements. The app will have quite a few extra features including sample import/export.
Hey great app, really nice effects, btw it needs a lot of improvements almost everywhere, can’t wait for the next update.. keep up the good work
Im planning lots of changes watch this space!
Hi
Great app ! But …. The sounds are triggered, when i release my finger, not with the first impact. So there is a delay. Am i missing something? Is there a way to change this ?
Best regards
Hi
You are correct, this is due to the amount of gestures sharing the view space. This issue will be resolved in the next update, currently working on a number of improvements, one of which is a new interface. Thanks for the feedback
I have an iPad 2, running the latest iOS update.
The only thing I get after tapping the “s-mashine” icon, is a black screen.
There is no grid whatsoever. And no matter where i touch the screen: nothing happens, nothing at all.
Hi Hendrik,
Im sorry to hear your are having problems. I tested the app today installing from scratch on an iPad2 running iOS 5.1.1 and on an iPad 3 running iOS 5.1.1 and couldn’t replicate the issue. Looking at some forums it appears that this particular update is affecting some users and on a multitude of apps. I presume you are running 5.1.1 ?
